About the Site
Maritime Asia: War and Trade is a collaboration between Associate Professor Adam Clulow, Associate Professor Xing Hang, and the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. The project has been generously supported by the American Council of Learned Societies and an ARC Future Fellowship (FT160100428). Special thanks to the students of Xing Hang’s class at Brandeis University who tested the classroom exercise and to Monash University for supporting the project. About Us
Adam Clulow is Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and Adjunct Associate Professor of Monash University. He is the author of The Company and the Shogun: The Dutch Encounter with Tokugawa Japan (Columbia University Press, 2014) which won multiple awards including the Jerry Bentley Prize in World History from the American Historical Association, and Amboina, 1623: Conspiracy and Fear on the Edge of Empire, which was published by Columbia University Press in 2019. He is, most recently, the editor with Lauren Benton and Bain Attwood of Protection and Empire: A Global History (Cambridge University Press, 2017) and the creator of The Amboyna Conspiracy Trial, an online interactive trial engine that received the New South Wales Premiers History Award in 2017.
Xing Hang is an Associate Professor of History at Brandeis University. He specializes in East Asian history, Eurasian comparative history, and Chinese nationalism and identity. His book, Conflict and Commerce in Maritime East Asia: The Zheng Family and the Shaping of the Modern World, c. 1620-1720, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2016. He has published widely on the Zheng Maritime Empire and won numerous teaching and research awards.
RRCHNM- The Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, with more than twenty years of experience in digital humanities and history education, has the proven ability to develop effective educational content, websites, interactive and mobile resources, and digital tools. RRCHNM is a democratic, collaborative space where scholars, developers, designers, and researchers work together to advance history and civics education and digital humanities. RRCHNM has partnered with schools, government agencies, museums, libraries, historic sites, and archives to create more than 100 free educational projects such as Teaching History and Eagle Eye Citizen, as well as the open source tools Zotero and Omeka.
